To enter
you must meet, then turn
back.  You  must
return and
then leave.  You must find words that
disconnect meaning.

Now burning,
now drowning, the waves
washing pure
energy
down dark deep, spiraling wheels
across the cosmos,

Unbridged nets
capturing sudden
stillness—wings
emerging,
multiplying time with fire–
opening beyond.

I’ve been meaning to redo this Beach I Ching with a new collage ever since I first posted it, a year and a half ago.  I thought the original collage I did was too busy.  This one better represents the fire over/under fire of the hexagram.

My original Beach I Ching photos were done in 2014, and I have photos from 2016 and 2017 as well.  So it’s time I get back to it on a regular basis.

  1. So creative, Kerfe. Just the idea of beach i ching and using the beach findings is brilliant! I checked out your other ones at the link. The collage rocks it. Makes me want to do some more. Maybe will try to do some with the dverse break…

      1. I was talking with my dream group about collage and they were receptive to it. Once we start meeting again in September, we’ll probably do a collage day. The two are closely linked, don’t you think?

    1. I just looked it up…lots of interesting variations. That’s a possible project for my trip to the beach. With the I Ching photos, I just arrange things randomly and then look them up later to see what they are. But it would be interesting to plan it out as well. In any case, it’s a beautiful design.

    1. Thanks Jane. The I Ching is definitely a mystery, but doing the collages helps me to figure out what it is saying to me. I think it’s like any tool–cards, meditation, music, taking a walk, dreaming, whatever–you are using what you see in it to work out what you need to think about.

  6. Thank you, for introducing me, to this poetic form. As I read this poem, my mind wander, to the many journeys that LGBTQ+ people (over a certain age) have been forced to walk, to gain clarity, for themselves and society.

    Knowledge, like enlightenment, is a journey filled with ebbs and flows, which tests our willingness to adapt and accept change.

  12. I love the idea of Beach I Ching and your collages are lovely, Kerfe. I haven’t been to the beach in a while – too tied up with marking exams. Now I’ve reached my deadline, and once I’ve caught up with the rest of life, I will go beach-combing again. Your poem has a wonderful spiralling, wavy, dreamlike quality that is hypnotising. I particularly like the idea of ‘capturing sudden stillness’.

    disconnect meaning”. It makes me think of letting go of all we know for a moment to see things in a new light, with new eyes.
