Must faith be
blind? Can we not see
the gaps in
all the things
we believe? How our desires
paint what we know with
what we wish?
Can we still nourish
hope, can we
still see the
magic if we chip off the
layers of shoulds and
musts, if we
ignore the rules and
open all
the doors and
windows? Can we acknowledge
that we will never
be certain
of what unspoken
forces guide
both our truths
and the other side of them–
where the shadows lie?
Amaya at dVerse asks us to consider the smoke and mirrors that surround us as we try figure out what’s really underneath it all.
Both photos were taken under the exact same conditions with different backgrounds–it changes how the camera acts, and as a result, how the light appears in the image.
Context colors everything we see.
A demonstration to illustrate what your poem is saying. Amazing how much it changes it. Brilliant, K! The conclusion you draw is the toughest part of all to accept.

Thanks Jade. I always photo things on both black and white, and they always look different. The shutter speed changes, too–I guess because the light reflects differently. And of course different light conditions and different times of day produce more different results. It’s the kind of thing I could waste a lot of time doing…

You are welcome and it does seem like it would be compelling to see how it changes the way you describe.

Even the paintings are undecided about what is the truth. Isn’t this a little like learning to know oneself, to be able to pick away the layers of handed-down wisdoms and all those things we have been told so often we assume they are right? It requires self-discipline, because often what we want to believe is what suits us best.

That’s true Jane. I’m still removing them. Still full of wishful thinking.

We all have layers of blindness. Unfortunately many people think they have 20/20 vision.

Very nice photo/art work on the top. I like that almost half circle thin bit of light on the edge and the orange and blue colors.
I think you are right that our desires paint what we know with what we wish.

Thanks Frank. Yes sometimes it’s hard to see what’s there through the veil of our wishes.

Signs are everywhere, for anyone who wants to see them. Or imagine them. Science has as many shadows as religion, but at least we’re able to shine some light into them, from time to time.

It’s true. There are assumptions behind every point of view. Science is at least open to change.

Oh those pesky layers! Such a beautiful poem and poignant questions. Opening all the doors and windows on this one. Nice meditation on the Pauline triumvirate, to have a faith without the hubris of inflexibility, hope to see the magic beyond the staid structure. And the love from being able to see both truths

Thanks Lona. Faith is difficult I find, right up there with trust. But magic is everywhere.

Indeed. A good degree of humility goes a long way. A long way to peace, no doubt.

Interesting and engaging direction you’ve taken with your perspective on Amaya’s smoke & mirrors prompt Kerfe well written. Integrity sheds a light on the smooth and the rough, but integrety is rare. Love the art!

Thanks Rob. Yes it is, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make the attempt.
