My untitled response to Henry Darger is among those posted today at the Ekphrastic Review. His work is a rich source for collage as well as words.
Natalie Merchant was inspired to produce a haunting song about him.
What do we really know about anyone else? Darger’s work is a testament to how much is always hidden from view. You can read about Henry Darger here.
And you can read my poem, and all the other responses, here. My thanks to editor Lorette Luzajic for once again including my work in this bi-weekly challenge.
Congratulations! I didn’t even attempt this one. It said zero to me. You, however, got a poem out of it!

Thanks Jane. I circled around this one for awhile. The collage, however, was easy.

I can see how it would lend itself to a collage, but the poetry eluded me.

That’s the way I felt about the swimming pig.

I agree, that was a particularly difficult one. It was so obviously just a pig in a swimming pool the result was fifty poems about a pig in a swimming pool.

Restating the obvious. We’re so good at it.

There are only so many ways you can say it, but we don’t seem to mind the repetition.

Congratulations, Kerfe! Loving the collage and now going to read your poem, listen to Natalie, and learn about Henry Darger.

Thanks Jade. He’s pretty interesting. And I’ve always loved that song.

As I started reading the bio I remembered him but this article has a lot more information about him. You did a great job with your concept in light of who he was and his art.

It’s both creepy and fascinating.

It’s like he tapped into another world. Have you read any of his writings? I just wonder if they are coherent. I read a graphic novel about Promethea that gave me that same sense of otherworldliness, one I was scared to go back into.

No I haven’t tried to read them. I think the art is as close as I want to get.

Question: where do you get your cool images for your collages? Most of the stuff I cut out of discarded magazines are pretty tame.

I’ve been collecting for years–magazines, catalogs, books I buy at book sales. When I worked in the fashion industry, I had lots of good magazines to cut from. But 20 years ago there was a lot more printed media available…most of it’s gone now. So more and more I buy used books.
