I have lost the barrier
between me and the world–
tangled in the web it weaves
to keep itself from falling apart
It holds my pieces tight
and yet the space between them
opens and shifts–
I have lost the barrier
What orbit holds my destiny?
edges come and go simultaneously
as the gaps grow wider
between me and the world
Bridges retreat and paths lead
farther away from any idea
of location—fragmented, off-center,
tangled in the web it weaves
Slowly threads expand on tides
of iridescence seen only in certain lights,
raveling random and untraceable connections
to keep itself from falling apart
An ekphrastic response to “Woman and Ghost”, which was gifted to me by the wonderful Claudia McGill, who has also gifted me with inspiration, support, and friendship.

For the NaPoWriMo day 20 prompt: “write a poem about a handmade or homemade gift that you have received”.
The poetic form I used is cascade.
I am honored. That my tiny little image meant this to you. That’s all I can say because I am speechless. Thank you. And your poem makes me want to say: I am yanking on the thread that holds you to me and tying it up with some knots. Because I feel lucky to have found you and your friendship and it’s one of the things that keeps me hanging on to things myself these days.

Thanks Claudia. Friendship is definitely a thread that mends all those holes. This painting, like all your work, has something new to say every day.

Thank you, in revisiting this post, I see comments that I hadn’t read and it revives the whole memory again. I thank everyone for their support and leave here again feeling revived by the ties we have formed.

Stunning artwork! I’m moved by the speaker’s pervading sense of disorientation–it matches the loneliness of the two figures in the painting.

Claudia’s work at times has surprised me, in a way that hints at truths you didn’t know were there, or else were trying to define.

A stunning response to Claudia’s haunting art. I particularly like the opening lines.
And Claudia’s comment above made me a bit teary-eyed.

Thanks Merril. I don’t think Claudia realizes how much influence her work has.

This is beautiful. 🙂 Her gift, that you have it, that you chose to write about it. ❤ I've had this post open for a while now with the photo of her gift showing. It calms me to look at that green and red and her pose. Wishing all well to both of you.
