the bridge to night,
hushed and wakeful,
asks me questions–
the words cast spells,
hushed and wakeful,
delicate and cobwebbed, into
ice—a sudden snow
asks me questions,
but I remain cloistered–
self-contained, undreamed—
the words cast spells–
maps sailing silent
unknown boundless seas

I started to construct a quadrille for dVerse, using the word ice given to us by Mish, and words from the Random Generator which Merril posted on Sunday. When I saw Colleen’s Ekphrastic prompt, above, it gave me a focus for what I had begun. I used the trimeric form.

Beautiful, deep work, perfectly delivered. I esp LOVE those closing 2 lines!
And a special thanks for adding Joni.

Thanks Aletha. It’s from a sketchbook project I’m doing with my sisters-in-law. We are just trying lots of different things, playing off each other. I’m enjoying it.

The first artwork goes so well with the opening line. I find the reference of undreamed to be unsettling. For me dreams hold everything together.

Thank you. I think you are right about dreams–we need them.

“the words cast spells,” “maps sailing silent” — just two of the phrases in this dreamy trimeric whose imagery gripped me. Fantastic poem, K. Beautiful artwork too!

Beautiful collage that I could stare at for a long time. The messages come from the stars if we know how to tune in.

Thanks Jade. The cosmos is always singing, but we are mostly deaf to it.

You know, Kerfe, it just struck me right now that there’s something about your poetry style that makes me feel as though you could pretty much make any word work in any poem.

This is really wonderful, Kerfe. I didn’t even notice the form–it just swept me in like waves.
And it does fit that painting. I especially love the final stanza.

I’m glad you gave it a whirl. It’s one of those forms that can be simply repetitive, or can be used more inventively. Good exercise in thinking about what the words actually mean.

Language is very flexible. That’s the fun of it. (or danger in some cases…)

The embroidered detail looks like image of neurones – this chimes well with your words

I’m going to carry the notion of being “undreamed”, and the imagery of snow being “cobwebbed” on my walk to the lake today. Thank you for that!
