Twice each year the absence digs a deeper hole. The day of your birth. The day of your death. What I should have said. What I should have done, but did not.
But time has other sides. Ends also have beginnings, middles. I remember seasons that soared so high they grew wings. And what remains from the center still holds my hand.

The combination of my favourite Cyndi Lauper song and your poignant haibun made me cry, Kerfe. I’m so sorry for your loss and the memory of it, and humbled by your stoicism.

Thank you Kim. Cyndi Lauper is so underrated. She really touches an emotional chord here that echoes my own feelings.

Ah yes, they are so mixed emotionally, our memories of our loved ones who have died! Such a journey we make, traversing those feelings! You’ve expressed it beautifully.

Anchored by nature. The comfort of the ‘in-between’. Powerful.

Yes, so beautifully put. The middle, when we were running alongside is what’s important, the ending tends to gather all the importance around itself.

Thanks Jane. I’m only just seeing how the end can overwhelm all that came before. But the center is where the heart is.

Our memory gets very selective, and it’s easy to let the dramatic memories wipe out the rest.
